Play Therapy is a method of therapy that uses play and toys to help a child identify feelings or needs and look at positive way to express their feelings and/or needs. It harnesses the therapeutic power of play to support children to facilitate communication, build their personal strengths, increase emotional wellness, and foster social relationships.
Play Therapy can support children who:
-
have disabilities or developmental delays or are a sibling of a child who does
-
have anxiety
-
have experienced trauma
-
are going through parental divorce
-
are struggling to manage their emotions
-
are having difficulties at school
-
are struggling with the impact of covid
-
have had medical issues or a family member with long term medical issues
-
is struggling with adjusting to big changes in life such as moving house, death of a family member, or the arrival of a new sibling
At Play Nature Therapy, we hold strong beliefs in the power of play but also the power of nature, thus we have combined these ideals when delivering our services.
There are many different forms of play therapy which the therapist can integrate into their work with children to best suit the specific needs of the child. There are more directive forms of therapy that support the development of key skills and non-directive forms where the therapy session is not pre-planned, rather the therapist follows the child where they need to be at that time. Play therapy can be used with individual children, in small groups and with families. There are links below for more information around the different forms of therapy we implement, keeping in mind that a child may end up accessing a combination of styles throughout their intervention.
Play Therapy is eligible under NDIS funding or can be accessed privately. There is no referral required from another health professional so if you think play therapy may be suitable for your child please contact us to arrange a meeting to discuss your options.
